Information to Collect After A Car Accident

If you are involved in a car accident, gathering the right information immediately can make a big difference and be very helpful for your car insurance claim. Here’s a checklist of the key items to collect and document:

1. At the scene of the accident

  • Make sure everyone is safe, move out of traffic if possible, call 911 or law enforcement if required.
  • Turn on hazard lights, and photograph the scene from multiple angles.

2. Exchange driver and vehicle information

From the other driver(s) you’ll want:

  • Full name, contact information (address, phone number). Take a picture of the other persons driver license number if possible
  • Driver’s license number, vehicle registration (make, model, year, color, license plate). Take a picture if possible.
  • Insurance company name and policy number for the other driver’s coverage.

3. Document the accident scene and damage

  • Take clear photographs or video of: vehicle damage (all angles), license plates, skid marks or road conditions, traffic signs or signals nearby, weather or lighting conditions.
  • Record the exact location (street, intersection, direction of travel), date and time.
  • If there are witnesses, get their names and contact information — their statements may help later.
  • Do not admit fault at the scene. Stick to the facts when describing what happened.

4. After leaving the scene

  • File or obtain a police (or law enforcement) report, especially if required by your state.
  • Notify your insurer (or your agent) as soon as possible. Many policies require prompt notification.
  • Preserve documentation: keep the photographs, notes of the event, any receipts (towing, rental car) and repair estimates once available.

By collecting this information you help protect your rights, support your claim and avoid potential complications down the road.

The Car Insurance Claims Process

Once you have gathered the required information and notified your insurer, here is how the process usually moves forward if your car is damaged and will need repair.

Step 1: Report the claim to your insurance company or agent

  • Contact your insurance provider (you or your agent) and provide the basic details: date/time/location of accident, names of drivers involved, vehicle(s) and insurance information. What happened.
  • Understand your policy coverages, deductibles, and what you are eligible for (for example rental vehicle coverage, if included).

Step 2: Claim investigation & damage assessment

  • The insurer will assign a claims adjuster who will review your claim, check coverage, fault (if applicable) and may inspect your vehicle.
  • You (or an auto body shop) will obtain a repair estimate showing the cost to restore your vehicle to pre-loss condition.
  • If additional damage is found during repair, supplemental estimates may be needed.

Step 3: Choose a repair shop and approve repair plan

  • Many insurers offer a preferred shop list, but you typically have the right to choose your own repair facility.
  • The repair shop and insurer agree on parts, labor, time frame. You may have discussions about OEM vs aftermarket parts depending on your policy.

Step 4: Repairs are completed & payment is arranged

  • Once repairs are complete, your insurer may pay the shop directly (minus your deductible) or reimburse you if you’ve paid the shop.
  • You pay your deductible (if applicable), to the repair shop.
  • If the vehicle is deemed a “total loss” (repair cost exceeds value), the insurer may settle by paying you the actual cash value less deductible.

Step 5: After-repair follow-up

  • Keep all receipts and documentation of the repair work (warranty, parts used, etc.).
  • If, after the repair, you identify additional damage, notify your insurer. Good shops will advise you if hidden damage appears later.
  • Review your claims experience and consider how your policy and coverages performed — this may inform future adjustments (deductible, repair facility preferences, rental coverage).

Why It Matters

  • Efficiently gathering correct information and following the proper claims process helps you avoid delays, can reduce your out-of-pocket cost and helps protect your rights in fault determination.
  • A properly repaired vehicle helps maintain safety, value and performance — especially important in Minnesota where weather, road conditions and vehicle use can be demanding.
  • From the agency (Ameriguard Insurance) perspective: educating clients in advance builds trust, reduces surprises after an accident and enables smoother claims experience, which supports client satisfaction and retention.
